Saving One of Madagascar's Rarest Palms A Save the Species Campaign of the International Paim Society |
|
About the Species Ravenea louvelii Beentje is a rare and Critically Endangered palm, endemic to Madagascar. For a long time, the species was known only from a single location, the montane forest of Anamalazaotra (around 1,000 meters elevation), in the Central-East of Madagascar. Today, this area is managed as Mitsinjo Park, by the Mitsinjo Association, where fewer than ten mature individuals and several clumps of juveniles have been recorded. Recent discoveries suggest a few additional scattered populations may still exist in nearby humid forests, but no comprehensive counts have ever been done. | Why It’s Endangered
